There is no other activity other than the annual financial statement of the government that evokes frenzied response, a period of animated suspense before its presentation and a feast of intellectual assessment in March each year. The Budget by far is the most significant event in the calendar of professionals, entrepreneurs, trade associations and academic campuses. This euphoria and public opinion formation is largely credited to barrister Nani Palkhivala who over three decades has made his annual assessment session more significant than even the budget. We have in our way sustained the efforts of Mr. Palkhivala by continuing his lecture series with Shri. P. Chidambaram, Former Union Finance Minister. The budget review could not be continued as Shri. P.Chidambaram is currently the Union Finance Minister again and would be reviewed once he demits his office.
An annual Inter-Collegiate debating and essay competition is conducted by the SIES College of Commerce & Economics, Sion (East). Essentially topics of relevance in Economics & Social Science form the subject of both essay and debate. A panel of experts drawn in consultation with the bank decides the relative merit of the presentations.
Each year after the presentation of the Budget and after the public address by Shri. P. Chidambaram, the SIES College of Management Studies, Nerul, in association with the Unit Trust of India organizes a day long workshop on the several aspects of the Union Budget. The programme is an annual feature which is funded by Unit Trust of India and is now five years old. The discussions cover economic direction, direct and indirect tax proposals, capital markets, foreign exchange and sovereign rating.
